Costain is a leading provider of consultancy, engineering, project delivery and asset support services across the Hydrocarbons, Chemicals, Nuclear Process, Water and Waste sectors. Graduate Process Engineers join the Manchester based Engineering Hub which provides process engineering expertise to major projects, technology development and services for Feasibility, Conceptual and Front End Design studies.

The successful candidate will join the Graduate Development Program which is accredited by the Institute of Chemical Engineers and is designed to equip graduates with the skills and experience required to take them forward in their career with the company. As a Graduate Process Engineer you will be assigned a mentor to provide support in your professional development and to guide you towards chartership. The training program provides “On the Job” technical development with graduates working on real work assignments under supervision and rapidly taking on responsibility for design work across the full project lifecycle within multi-disciplinary project teams. We expect graduates to rotate after 12 months to another sector of the business.

What will I be doing?

  • The design work undertaken by Graduate Process Engineers is varied and assignments can include work across all project phases including Feasibility Studies; Conceptual Design; Front End Engineering Design (FEED); Detailed Design and Site Activities.
  • Study Work can include technology selection; process development; process simulation and optimisation; economic evaluation; preparation of process flow diagrams and heat and material balances; input into project schedule and cost estimates; basis of design preparation and technical report preparation.
  • FEED and Detailed Design activities include: process flow diagrams; detailed heat & material balances; process description; design philosophies; equipment sizing and specification; specification of control valves and instrumentation; relief study; P&ID development; design assessments including HAZOP and preparation of operating instructions.
  • Business rotations into other business functions may form part of the graduates development plan available in order to provide further breadth of experience which can include: Business Strategy/Development, Project Engineering, Project Controls, Construction, Commissioning, Design HSE, Proposals and Work Winning.

About you

  • Self-motivated graduates possessing good communication and work organisation skills coupled with a record of excellent academic achievement.
  • 2:1 MEng or equivalent in an IChemE accredited Chemical Engineering degree.
  • While the role will be predominantly based in our South Manchester Office, mobility to work on secondment to any of our offices or project sites is required.
  • To enable us to fully assess your application, please ensure your application includes details of your educational qualifications at both degree and A Level; university course modules and projects undertaken, yearly degree course results including module breakdown where available, nationality, work permit status (where applicable) and driving license status.

Final Statement

Assessment centres will take place in November/December 2017 at our Head Office in Maidenhead, SL6 4UB.
